Detail of a lioness-griffin that has captured a lizard from the mosaic floors of the peristyle court in the Great Palace of Constantinople, possibly from the times of Justinian I, the builder of Hagia Sophia. This mosaic and many others can be visited at their original location on the unearthed floors that Justinian himself trod,right by the hippodrome that now forms the Sultanahmet square.
After the Nikia and Hippodrome revolts of 532 that destroyed part of the Imperial Palace of Constantine in Constantinople, subsequent rebuilding by Justinian and possibly added to by Heraclius created a mosaic peristyle colonnaded court with imperial mosaics that made up part of the new palace adjacent to the Hippodrome.
