Description
Roman Mosaic, Merida, Spain.
Detail of one of the recovered mosaics that decorated the floors of the houses of the nobility in Merida, the former Roman city of Emerita Augusta, in Imperial times.
Floors of Roman patrician "domus" or houses were extensively covered with mosaic, while walls were decorated with frescoes. This mosaic can be found in the Roman Museum of Mérida with many others, while some more can be admired at their original locations in domus as part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Emerita Augusta was the capital of Lusitania one of the three Roman provinces that comformed the Spanish territories. It was founded in 25 BC by Augustus to resettle veteran soldiers discharged from the Roman army from Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina.
