Description
Alcazar Castle and Cathedral tower, Segovia Spain.
View of the Castle of Segovia and the Cathedral tower from the crop fields.
Rising out on a rocky crag above the confluence of two rivers, this fortress in Segovia is one of the most distinctive castle-palaces in Spain. The medieval Alcázar was originally built as a fortress on top of older defensive structures dating back to the Roman empire. After the Reconquest, the Castle was turned into a Royal Palace. Centuries later it also served as state prison, artillery college and a military academy since then. It is currently used as a museum and a military archives building.
There is no vantage point from which this fortress would not impress me, but this one, with its strange feeling of movement, is probably my favorite.
A truly awe-striking strong-point with a fairy tale touch.
