Description
Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna, Rome.
An unusually empty view of the normally overcrowded Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna, Rome.
The Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) climb a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church and its obelisk at the top.
The monumental stairway of 135 steps was designed and built in 1723–1725 by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi.
The Piazza connects directly through the via del Babuino with the Porta del Popolo, the northern gate of Rome through which most of the foreigners arrived in Rome, so everybody has been passing through this square for centuries. This is one of the reasons why the Piazza di Spagna is one of the Romans' most beloved squares.
A beautiful place one must visit early.
