Artist's Description

The late Roman Caesar Diocletian's mausoleum as seen from the gates of the Temple of Jupiter. Split is yet another city created by the will of a Roman emperor. Diocletian was the first emperor to abdicate the position voluntarily. He lived out his retirement in a huge palace on the Dalmatian coast, tending to his vegetable gardens. This enormous palace eventually became the core of the old city of Split in Croatia. He was buried in a Mausoleum at the center of the palace, which later became the Split Cathedral we see on this picture. Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 to 305. Born in Dalmatia, he rose through the ranks all the way to emperor. His reign stabilized the empire and marks the end of the Crisis of the Third Century. He created the 'tetrarchy', or "rule of four", in which four men would rule over a quarter-division of the empire. Diocletian secured the empire's borders and enlarged the empire's civil and military services. Although effective while he ruled, Diocletian...
