Description
Street in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain.
View of one of the medieval sloped streets of Vejer.
Vejer de la Frontera is a Spanish hilltop town of medieval Islamic origin, overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar and surrounded by orchards and orange groves in the Andalusian province of Cadiz. A maze of narrow streets of snow-white-plastered and flat-roofed buildings under an eternal blue sky, Vejer is considered one of the most beautiful towns of Spain.
As many Spanish cities, Vejer is a mixture of ancient churches, convents, and the architecture and urban structure of the Al-Andalusian period, which lasted from 711 until 1492.
Vejer was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1976, and it was also awarded with the First National Embellishment Award in 1978, as well as with the distinction of area of Important Influx of Visitors in 1996-2000 and 2000-04.
