Description
This is the picture of an actual working T-34-85 Tank, shot in France.
The T-34 was a Soviet medium tank. First deployed in 1940, it was probably the most effective, efficient, and influential tank design of World War II.
The T-34 was designed to face the magnificent Panzer IV German tanks. It combined the best balance of firepower, mobility, protection, and ruggedness. Its heavy sloped armor was impenetrable by standard anti-tank weapons, and it was very agile.
The apparition of the T-34 on the eastern front caused the production of the German Tiger I and II tanks, and this, in return, brought the armor reinforcement and the change of the turret in order to house the 85 mm cannon that you can see in this picture instead of the former 76mm. The cannon was so long the tank had to move with the barrel aiming upwards, not to ram it on the ground when faring through uneven terrain.
The T-34 was the mainstay of Soviet armored forces throughout World War II. The design and construction of the tank were continuously refined during the war to enhance effectiveness and decrease costs, allowing steadily greater numbers of T-34s to be fielded despite heavy losses. It was the most-produced tank of the war.
