Description
The Temple of Diana, , Merida, Spain.
Front view of the Roman Temple of Diana and the palace within.
The Temple of Diana dates back to the 1st century BCE and was in fact dedicated to the goddess Roma and the Emperor Augustus. It is known as the Temple of DIana since the 17th century.
The Temple stood at the centre of a walled square shaped space and was flanked by two ponds. There was a frontal staircase, now disappeared.
Around the 8th century an Islamic building was built against the temple. After the Reconquest, in the 15th century, a knight of the Order of Saint James built his palace inside the remains of the Roman temple.
The palace is now part of the Temple’s history and it has been preserved within.
Emerita Augusta was the capital of Lusitania one of the three Roman provinces that comformed the Spanish territories. It was founded in 25 BC by Augustus to resettle veteran soldiers discharged from the Roman army from Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina.
