Description
The Bridesmaid, James Tissot, 1885.
La Demoiselle d'honneur. These "Women of Paris" paintings are full of life and reality. All eyes are on the pretty young woman in blue about to step into the carriage helped by a young gentleman. This daily life snapshot in the midst of the bustle of Paris, viewed by shop girls and butcher's boys, is an ode to seeing, which is discreetly reinforced by the presence of the optician's sign to the left of the umbrella.
Jacques Joseph Tissot, Anglicized as James Tissot, was a French painter and illustrator. He was a successful painter of Paris society before moving to London in 1871. He became famous as a genre painter of fashionably dressed women shown in various scenes of everyday life. He also painted scenes and characters from the Bible. He spent part of his life in England where he was appreciated as a high society painter of the Victorian era.
