Close view of Il Pescatorello, The Fisherboy, a bronce casting sculpted by Vincenzo Gemito in 1876 as it can be seen at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy.
Gemito used to walk the streets of Naples and observe people in their daily lives. Fishing boys were not unusual. The statue represents a young Neapolitan fisherboy, squatted on a slippery rock while holding a freshly caught, still moving and also slippery fish. The boy’s hair is wet, his exaggeratedly eyelashed eyes lowered on the fish that squirms in an attempt to free itself. On his belly he carries an artisan net and with his right arm he holds a slender rod. The moment of the kid holding to the slippery fish and keeping his balance at the same time is perfectly caught.
