Description
The ruins of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Wandrille in Normandy.
Only a small portion of the ancient abbey ruins remain. Most of the building belongs to the renaissance and is in good condition. However, this tall piece of the nave stands attached to the modern building. It is a wonderful view of mystic beauty, a magic atmosphere of a kind that is hard to find elsewhere.
As many other abbeys in this region, the first building, of Norman origin, was erected around 650 AD. Wars, lightning and fire destroyed it partially once and again through the centuries, but it was rebuilt higher and stronger every time.
French Revolution ended its monastical life and it was then used as a factory and partially demolished. After the revolution, already in the 19th century, the abbey was restored to the Benedictines.
