Description
The Goddess of Mount Fuji, Konohana Sakuya Hime. 17th Century. Detail image.
The Goddess of Mount Fuji is a ukiyo-e woodblock print from the 17th century. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries that produced woodblock prints and paintings of individuals as female beauties, kabuki actors or sumo wrestlers and scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, etc.
Woodblock printing in Japan was used in single art sheets and also for book printing during the Edo period (1603–1868). Similar to Western woodcut printmaking, it used water-based inks instead of oil-based.
