Description
The old Cathar Stronghold.
Standing proud above the village of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and overlooking the wide valley, the castle of Castelnaud was one of the main Cathar strongholds on the Albigensian Crusade.
Many beautiful castles remain that never saw war, but the chateau de Castelnaud, an evolution of the first castle built in the 12th century, was repeatedly used to the extent of its possibilities and endured many a siege, invasion and change of hands in the unaccountable wars of the middle ages.
Ultimately abandoned before the French revolution, it was restored and now holds a warfare museum. The tower on the right was destroyed by lightning.
