Description
The Pigeon and the wolf at the Fonte Gaia, Siena, Italy
The Fonte Gaia sits at the top center of the Piazza del Campo, the main square in Siena, Tuscany, where the Palio horse race takes place twice a year. Ii is a nice vantage point from which to observe the torre del Mangia, highest tower of the kind in Italy, and the Cappella di Piazza, the chapel of the square.
The square-shaped fountain is surrounded by water spouting she-wolves representing the mother-wolf of Remus and Romulus. It was funny to find out that the pigeons drink exclusively from these sprouts, where the water is freshest, and that they wait turns by the water elsewhere.
I visited Siena from Florence. Once enemies, Florence came out reinforced after the Black Death devastated Europe, but Siena never recovered. Before they had the chance, Florence invaded and would never permit Siena to grow strong again. Maybe because of that, Siena still preserves its medieval structure and atmosphere, which makes her so beautiful.
