Description
The Sacred Family by Pompeo Batoni. Capitoline Museums, Rome.
Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708 – 1787) was an Italian painter who specizlized in portraits and allegorical and mythological pictures.
Batoni's style took inspiration and incorporated elements of classical antiquity, French Rococo, Bolognese classicism, and the work of artists as Raphael. Pompeo Batoni is considered a precursor of Neoclassicism.
A very delicate, classic and timeless work, this Holy Family a simple composition, with the Child rushing to embrace the Virgin, who in turn reciprocates by bringing her lips close to her son's forehead to kiss him, while Saint Joseph, resting his hands on a closed book, observes the scene with visible joy. Maria's husband is in the semi-darkness and is the most obvious concession to naturalist painting by the artist.
