Description
Tiger hunting bull, Roman mosaic, 4th century AD.
Roman Marble mosaic from the second quarter of the 4th century depicting a Tigress assaulting a calf. This panel was made in "opus sectile", a mosaic technique that uses big marble pieces conveniently shaped instead of the usual small squarish tesserae of the more extended "opus tesselatum" modality. The mosaic is 49x72".
The hunting scene could be an exotic natural composition or a hunting show of the Colosseum.
