Description
Toledo from beyond Alcantara Bridge, Spain.
Panoramic view of Toledo from the hill across the Roman bridge of Alcantara spanning the Tagus river.
The origins of Toledo vanish into the past. First mentioned by the Romans when they conquered and renamed it Toletum, there is evidence of human habitation since prehistoric times. The city, set on a steep hill enclosed and protected by a meander of the Tagus river, has been a natural fortress for millennia.
Toledo was Capital of the Visigoth kingdom after the fall of the Roman Empire, it became a prominent Al-Andalusian city under the Muslim rule and became Capital city of Spain after the Reconquest.
Toledo became famous in the Middle Ages for its steel and damascene and was a cultural melting pot where Christians, Muslims and Hebrews coexisted with a certain, if not much, amount of harmony, which was absolutely uncommon in Spain in those times and unheard of in the rest of Europe.
Today, Toledo preserves much of all that inheritance that makes of it one of the most beautiful and historically rich cities in Spain, which is no small feat at all.
