Description
Vincent Van Gogh,The Siesta, 1890.
The siesta was painted in Saint-Rémy de Provence while Van Gogh was interned in a mental asylum. Van gogh made a “reinterpretation” of some black and white prints of a set of paintings by Millet known as Four Moments in the Day.
Millet's works always caught of Van Gogh’s attention. From his youth he was interested in him as the master who had contributed most to contemporary French art, even above Manet himself.
In this painting, Van Gogh seeks inspiration from his beloved teacher in the first month of 1890, continuing an extensive series begun in the fall. Based on the stamps he owns, he will carry out a reworking or "translation" as he calls it himself. Remaining faithful to the original composition even down to the still life details in the foreground, Van Gogh still imposes his own style upon this restful scene which, for Millet, symbolized rural France of the 1860's. This highly personal reinterpretation is achieved primarily by contrasting complementary colors: blue-violet, yellow-orange.
Vincent is concerned with the study of light and shadow, heir to Impressionism, by resorting to a colored shadow. The area of the foreground acquires a different tone from the bright yellow of the background; blues and mauves complement the composition, creating an alluring symphony of color. The workmanship is very fast, and we can clearly notice the brush-strokes on the canvas while the contour lines are marked with a dark color, recalling the symbolism of Gauguin and Bernard. Despite the peaceful nature of the subject, the picture radiates Van Gogh's unique artistic intensity.
This painting can be admired at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, France.
As for Paris... what can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said...?
