Description
Vineyards by the Sea. Getaria, Basque Country, Spain. First visit.
The vineyard-covered land falls gently towards the sea of the Bay of Viscay on this idyllic landscape of the Basque coast above the small fisher town of Getaria. That old little village was the birthplace of Joan Sebastian Elcano, first to surround the world in the 16th century.
These grapes are used to make a peculiar sort ow white wine called Txakoli, which is only produced in this part of northern Spain.
The Basque Country, a third of the land area of New Jersey and a population of 2.1 mil, gathers 30 Michelin Stars in 21 different restaurants, 4 of them three-starred, and has two establishments in the top 10 world ranking of 2014 and another 3 in the top 50. San Sebastian, with roughly 175,000 inhabitants has a Michelin Star density equivalent to that of Paris, only far less costly. There is a Michelin star down there in Getaria too.
Here you can find from prehistoric paintings, medieval cities and fortresses, ancient whaling towns like Getaria to Gehry's Guggenheim, beaches, mountains, deserts... If you enjoy history, beautiful landscapes, quiet and good food, you should not miss this place.
