Description
White Horse Waves in the Cote des Basques, Biarritz, France.
The wind from the continent combs long horse manes off the breaking waves at the Plage de la Cote des Basques (Coast of the Basques Beach) in Biarritz.
The Cote des Basques Beach is a classic surfing spot. It’s the birthplace of French surfing which began in 1956. Peter Viertel was the first to ride the tubes of the Atlantic Ocean. He was also the one who made the sport popular in France. Biarritz then became the surfing reference throughout Europe.
The beach boasts an exceptional setting. The famous and sumptuous Villa Belza, which seems to literally come out of the cliff is built to the north. The Spanish coastline extends to the south.
At low tide, the spot is ideal for beginners. It becomes more technical at high tide and is thus recommended for the most experienced surfers. The waves break on the rocks and the sea covers the whole beach. It is an ever-evolving beach break as the sand banks move regularly. Cote des Basques is particularly appreciated by long boarders. This beach was elected “Most beautiful beach of France” by TripAdvisor in 2017.
Biarritz is a city of the French Basque Country. It was a fishing and whaling village that turned into a summer vacation ever since the European royalty began visiting in the 1800s.
Since then, Biarritz has been known as the pearl in the crown of Southwestern France. The luxurious resort in the French Basque Country with its mild climate and beautiful coastline has attracted visitors such as Napoleon III and his wife, Eugenie, whom the prestigious Hotel du Palais was built for. Nowadays, Biarritz is known as the European surfing capital, with annual competitions of world-class standard.
As a result, lots of wonderful villas of different styles were built all along the seaside. One of them, the first one you find walking north along the beautiful coastline, is the Villa Belza, the Black Villa in Basque, which hangs on to a cliff on top of a promontory by the sea. This impressive villa, the most emblematic in Biarritz, was designed and built by Alphonse Bertrand in 1880 and marks the southern edge of the old part of the city.
