Description
Memorial to the men of the 130th Division at Douaumont. The wounded lion.
When you are reaching the Verdun Memorial and museum, near the Douaumont fort, you get to a crossroads in the woods. If you are coming from Verdun, to your left you will find this wounded lion, lying on a huge stone pedestal. It is the memorial to the men of the French 130th Division who fought and died there.
Its position at the site of the former ruins of the Chapel of Sainte-Fine, in an area of still deeply blasted forests and vanished villages, marks the furthest that the Germans managed to advance towards Verdun in their attack of 12 July 1916.
