Description
The tiny flowers of yarrow.
Considered a multipurpose medicinal plant for centuries, the beauty of this tiny cousin of the daisies when looked up close is at least surprising.
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow or common yarrow, is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe and North America.
In New Mexico and southern Colorado, it is called plumajillo (Spanish for 'little feather') from its leaf shape and texture. In antiquity, yarrow was known as herba militaris, for its use in stanching the flow of blood from wounds. Other common names for this species include gordaldo, nosebleed plant, old man's pepper, devil's nettle, sanguinary, milfoil, soldier's woundwort, thousand-leaf, and thousand-seal.
The plants have feathery leaves arranged around the stems, which can grow up to 3 ft but are usually less than 1.5 ft tall, and an inflorescence comprises three to eight (usually five) roundish ray flowers surrounding between 15 and 40 tiny disc flowers.
Yarrow had a high reputation and was widely employed in herbal medicine, administered both internally and externally. It was used in the treatment of a very wide range of disorders but was particularly valued for treating wounds, stopping the flow of blood, treating colds, fevers, kidney diseases, menstrual pain etc. The whole plant was used, both fresh and dried. The herb is antiseptic, antispasmodic, mildly aromatic, astringent, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogue, odontalgic, stimulant, bitter tonic, vasodilator and vulnerary. It also contains the anti-inflammatory agent azulene. The fresh leaf was applied direct to an aching tooth in order to relieve the pain.
