Description
Yellow Stagshorn, a tiny fire in the woodlands.
Calocera viscosa, commonly known as the yellow stagshorn, is a jelly fungus, member of the Dacrymycetales, an order of fungi characterized by their unique tuning fork basidia.
Composed of multiple two-pronged tiny threads, this bright orange, yellow, or occasionally white jelly fungus grows on decaying conifer stumps and fallen trunks. It is so bright colored it seems to glow against the dark woodland.
Its branching basidiocarps are somewhat gelatinous in texture and slimy to the touch (hence the specific name). It is widespread and common, and its bright color makes it stand out in its habitat. It is not poisonous and has been used as a garnish on occasion.
