Artist's Description
Prehistoric Bison from Altamira, Spain. Digital painting.
The bison in Altamira are beyond any doubt amongst the most fine and exquisite paintings of the paleolithic. It is difficult to find bison of similar delicacy in Lascaux, Chauvet or Niaux, to mention some of the most amazing caves so far discovered.
This painting was made from a carbon copy Abbott Henri Breuil drew straight off the roof of the cave in 1906.
The paintings in Altamira date from the Magdalenian age, about 15-17,000 ybp.
The steppe bison or steppe wisent (Bison priscus) is an extinct species of bison that ranged Europe, Asia, and North America during the Quaternary.
Over 6 ft tall at the shoulder, reaching 2,000 lb in weight, with the tips of the horns three feet apart and the horns themselves over 1.5 ft long, it had to be pretty awe-striking to come across a creature like this one. Particularly if you meant to hunt it.
Huge, immensely powerful and short temper...
About Weston Westmoreland

Hi there, Born in '72 and shooting pictures since '83, I have concentrated my efforts in Cave Art and Ancient Civilizations. I also enjoy creating panoramic compositions... But not just... Here you will find landmarks, landscapes and cityscapes, ancient ruins and modern buildings, moons and seas, planes and boats, guns and flowers, animals and machines, forests and deserts, vanguard and prehistory, digital and film, color and black & white, graves and newborns, temples, trenches, palaces, castles, tanks, churches, bunkers... However, they have some things in common: they are meaningful images and they are for the most part unique. W. W.
