Artist's Description

Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal, Nineveh, Assyrian Empire, c. 645 BC.

The royal Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal is shown on a famous group of Assyrian reliefs from the North Palace of Nineveh. They are considered the supreme masterpieces of Assyrian art. They show the ritual "hunt" by King Ashurbanipal (reigned 668 – c. 631/627 BC) in an arena where captured Asian lions were released from cages for the king to slaughter with arrows, spears, or sword. They were made during his reign and were originally placed around the palace. They were probably painted.

Ashurbanipal was the last great Assyrian king, and his reign ended the Neo-Assyrian Empire. As little as 25 years after these bass-reliefs were made, the empire fell apart and Nineveh was sacked and burnt.

About Weston Westmoreland

Weston Westmoreland

Hi there, Born in '72 and shooting pictures since '83, I particularly enjoy creating wide panoramic compositions, HDRs, HDR Panoramas... But not just... Here you will find landscapes and cityscapes, ancient ruins and modern buildings, moons and seas, planes and boats, guns and flowers, animals and machines, forests and deserts, vanguard and prehistory, digital and film, color and black & white, graves and newborns, temples, trenches, palaces, castles, tanks, churches, bunkers... However, they have some things in common: they are meaningful images, I believe them all to be beautiful, and they are for the most part unique. Come in and judge for yourself. W. W. WE CAN CUSTOMIZE ANY PICTURE TO YOUR PERSONAL LIKING AND MAKE IT...
