This star shaped fortress built on the 16th century right on the tide line protected the small beach from pirates and invaders. The fishermen's boats wait on the beach for the tide to come back in.
Cadiz, known as the "tacita de plata" or silver cup, was built at the end of a long peninsula before the Roman Empire, by Phoenicians or Greeks and remained the only part of Spain that resisted Napoleon's invasion in the early 19th century. The first Spanish Constitution, known as "la Pepa" was written and proclaimed in Cadiz in 1812, only to be suspended by the returning king after the Spanish population and guerrillas pushed the French out with the invaluable help of the British Army commanded by who would become the Duke of Wellington.
