Description
Crucifixion of Saint Peter, by Caravaggio 1601. Church of Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome.
The painting depicts the martyrdom of St. Peter. Peter, when he was condemned to death in Rome, requested to be crucified upside-down because he considered himself unworthy of being killed like Jesus.
The painting shows the moment when three executioners are getting the cross upright. Peter is already nailed. The apostle is naked except a white loincloth around his waist. He is old, but his body is still strong.
The three men struggle to lift the cross. One is pulling with ropes while the other two try to raise it with their arms and shoulders. Their faces are shielded.
