Chenonceau Ball room, France. Vertical version.
Square view of the ball room on the first floor of the chateau across the Cher river and the gate to the drawing bridge at the south bank. The ball room occupies the length of the bridge, with windows to both sides. The diagonaly checkered floor covers the whole stance.
This is probably the most peculiar and beautiful castle of the Loire Valley and I think there is a reason for this that makes it all the more special: It was devised and protected by women. Oddly enough, this chateau is not by the Loire river, but straddling the Cher.
Starting from a square keep and its fortified mill, it was Diane de Poitiers in 1555 who commissioned the building of the bridge and gardens. Later on, Catherine de Medici added the gallery on top of the bridge and expanded the gardens. It passed then to Louise de Lorraine.
