This is probably one of the most unexpected cave paintings ever found and that in one of the most unexpected places.
There are three painted great auks in Cosquer cave, the only ones ever found so far, and we are lucky to have found them. During the last glacial period, the Mediterranean shore was several miles south of the cave, the sea level about 330 ft below the entrance. Today, this same entrance is 90 ft under the sea and the cave, discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer and named after him, can only be accessed scuba diving through a 575 ft long tunnel that has already claimed more than one life.
At the end of this tunnel, which runs slightly upwards, the chamber formed a big bubble. Most of the paintings have been destroyed by the sea water, but many have been preserved in that bubble....
