The Cross of Saint James.
The Order of St. James of the Sword was founded in the 12th century in the kingdom of Leon. Its objective was to protect the pilgrim of St. James' Way and to defend Christendom from the Muslim kingdoms of what now is southern Spain.
The Cross is combination of a sword and a cross fleury, with a scallop behind. The scallop is the symbol of St. James' Way and the lion below is a reference to the city and Kingdom of Leon, where this engraving is part of the facade of Saint Mark's convent.
The text at the bottom reads "principium Ordinis S Jacobi", in reference to the origin of the order.
Saint Mark's convent in Leon is one of the most important monuments of the Renaissance in Spain. It has a highly ornamental plateresque facade.
The origins of this building lie in the twelfth century, in the days of Alfonso VII of Le�n. His sister made a donation in 1152 to construct a modest building where "the poor of Christ"...
