Description
Osborne Bull, el Toro de Osborne, Spain.
View of the Osborne Bull near Las Cabezas de San Juan, on the way from Cadiz to Seville.
The Osborne bull (Toro de Osborne) is a 46 ft high black silhouetted image of a bull that can be seen from many roads all along the Spanish territory.
The Osborne bull was created as a billboard for the Osborne sherry company in 1956 to advertise their Brandy. The image was black with the brand in red on it. These advertising boards were always located near major roads throughout Spain. The original bull was enlarged to comply with a law that prohibited advertising within 150 yards of a road.
A law from 1994 banned all roadside advertising of alcohol and condemned the bulls. However, by this time the signs were nationally renowned and public response resulted in the signs being retained, but completely blacked out to remove all reference to the original advertisers. The Court eventually allowed these signs to remain on the grounds that they have become a part of the landscape and have "aesthetic or cultural significance", thus turning the bulls into public domain images.
This bull is now widely identified with the image of Spain, and has become a modern totem of sorts, appearing in stickers, flags, etc.
There are 93 Osborne bulls standing in Spain.
There is a vintage version of this image.
