Description
King Ramesses II, the Younger Memnon, Egypt, c.1250 BC. Black bacground.
Colossal granite image of King Ramesses II, from Karnak (Thebes), Egypt, about 1250 BC. It's the upper part of a colossal seated statue, one of a pair that flanked a gate in the king's mortuary temple, the 'Ramesseum" (the head of the other statue is still found at the temple).
The sculpture depicts the Nineteenth Dynasty Pharaoh wearing the Nemes head-dress with a cobra diadem on top. It was carved from one block, quarried at Aswan almost 124 miles further south. Roughly shaped and weighing some 20 tons, it was transported on sleds over land and on a purpose-built boat down the river Nile. Once erected, the statue's finer sculpting was completed. Like all Egyptian statues, it was originally painted. Traces of the pigments remain.
The statue is 8 ft 10 in high and 6 ft 7 in wide (across the shoulders). It weighs 7.25 tons and was cut from a single block of two-colored granite. There is a slight variation of normal conventions in that the eyes look down slightly more than usual, and to exploit the different colors (broadly speaking, the head is in one color, and the body another).
