Description
Siena Duomo front, Tuscany, Italy.
Siena Cathedral, the Duomo di Siena, is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (Holy Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption).
The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, which make it particularly peculiar and beautiful.
Siena and Florence were enemy powers in the Middle Ages. Florence came out reinforced after the Black Death devastated Europe, but Siena never recovered. Before they had the chance, Florence invaded and would never permit Siena to grow strong again. Maybe because of that, Siena still preserves its medieval structure and atmosphere, which makes her so beautiful.
The Duomo di Siena was intended to be much bigger, but the project was never completed.
