Description
Violinist by the Duomo, Siena, Italy.
I came across this amazing violinist while walking arounfd the Duomo of Siena. His name is Milan Kurc and he was playing like I had never heard before. I was fortunate enough to catch him playing Vavilov's Ave Maria, and after asking him if it was included in his CD, I bought it. And it was not, XD. What can I say. I bear no grudge. I did not know this Ave Maria, and listening to him playing there was worth much more than the cost of the CD.
Siena Cathedral, the Duomo di Siena, is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (Holy Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption). The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, which make it particularly peculiar and beautiful.
I visited Siena from Florence. Once enemies, Florence came out reinforced after the Black Death devastated Europe, but Siena never recovered. Before they had the chance, Florence invaded and would never permit Siena to grow strong again. Maybe because of that, Siena still preserves its medieval structure and atmosphere, which makes her so beautiful.
The Duomo di Siena was intended to be much bigger, but the project was never completed.
There is a vintage version of this image.
