The winding staircase, panoramic photograph.

A winding staircase climbs up the abrupt slope of the tiny island to the ancient Christian shrine of Gaztelugatxe, in the rough Basque Coast of the Bay of Viscay.

built around the 11th century and dedicated to Saint John, this little rocky island and temple were attacked and burned down by Drake himself in 1593. The shrine has been destroyed by attacks, nature and accidents many times. Last fire happened in 1978.

This island and its winding staircase have been used to create Dragonstone castle in Game of Thrones.
