Description
Transportation of Cedar wood from Lebanon. Dur-Sharrukin Court, around 710 BC.
This bas-relief depicting the transportation of cedar wood from Lebanon belonged to the court of the unfinished capital city of Sargon II, Dur-Sharrukin, present day Khorsabad. Mesopotamian civilizations flourished in lands poor in stone and forests, so the supplying of these goods presented great political relevance.
This engraving shows Neo-Assyrian ships carrying and dragging cedar logs, guided by protective deities.
Sargon II died in battle in 705 BC and his body was never retrieved. His son Sennacherib, decided to keep the capital city in Nineveh, so Dur-Sharrukin was abandoned and covered by the sands of time.
