Description
The Birth of Venus, by Sandro Botticelli. Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
This is one of the amazing paintings you can find at the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence.
The Birth of Venus was probably painted in the mid 1480s. It depicts the goddess Venus reaching the shore fully-grown after her birth.
Although the two are not a pair, the painting is inevitably discussed with Botticelli's other very large mythological painting, the Primavera, also in the Uffizi. Both are among the most famous paintings in the world, and are icons of the Renaissance. The Birth is even better known than the Primavera. Depictions of classical mythology on a very large scale were virtually unprecedented in Western art since classical antiquity, as was the size and prominence of a nude female figure in the Birth.
Most art historians agree that the Birth does not require of complex analysis to decode its meaning. While there are subtleties in the painting, its main meaning is a straightforward treatment of a traditional Greek mythology scene, and its appeal is sensory and very accessible, hence its enormous popularity.
