Description
Great Grey Owl.
The great grey owl, or great gray owl (Strix nebulosa), is the world's largest species of owl by length. Distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, it is the only species in the Strix genus found in both Eastern and Western Hemispheres. It is also called Phantom of the North, cinereous owl, spectral owl, Lapland owl, spruce owl, bearded owl, and sooty owl.
Great Grey Owls have large rounded heads with a grey face, the largest facial disc of any raptor, and spectacular yellow eyes. The color of the eyes tells us these owls are daylight hunters. These owls do not have the ear tufts used for camouflage.
looking at at one of these creatures up close is an intense experience. The gray rounded face with the stern intense yellow no nonsense stare is certainly awe-striking. Elegant proud creatures. I am glad they are out there.
