Description
Latona and her sons closer, Domenico Pieratti, 1634. Palazzo Barberini, Rome.
This is fairly unusual. The little card on this beautiful sculpture in Palazzo Barberini says this is Latona and her sons. We think not. Latona was mother to DIana and Apollo, who were twins, and always appear peacefully represented.
This sculpture is anything but peaceful. The two kids, both boys and of different ages, look scared, and their mother is on one knee, begging and distressed, oblivious of her son pulling her dress down.
We read around, and believe it fits much better with the sculpture, this is actually Medea, who having been abandoned by Jason, killed their sons in vengeance and despair. This would be the momento when Jason forsakes her.
Latona was the Roman version of Greek goddess Leto. You can find this magnificent lion at the foot of Bernini's staircase, on the left wing of the palace.
Designed in a triangular composition formed by three figures, Latona takes the center on one knee as she turns her head up while her children cling to her.
