Prehistoric Bison 1 - La Covaciella cave, Asturias, Spain. Digital oil painting.
Detail of a Magdalenian monochromatic bison known as the "female". La Covaciella cave was discovered in 1994, and as part of the "Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain" site, it is included in the Unesco World Heritage list since 2008.
The recent discovery of the cave and the modern means and politics of preservation (this cave cannot be visited) offer us some exquisitely preserved images from the Magdalenian era like these two bison.
Not as famous as the French caves due to a much lower degree of publicity and touristic exploitation, the Spanish caves are many and equal in richness and artistry to those in France. The bison in Altamira, the horses in Ekain or these recent finds of La Covaciella attest to the fact.
