Description
Rome from Saint Peter's dome lantern. Vatican city.
Climbing up a myriad steep stairs through narrow and curved-walled passages until you finally reach the lantern and stand right above the dome curving down into a free fall toward Piazza San Pietro is not for the faint-hearted, particularly if you suffer from vertigo, claustrophobia or you are simply not fit for the strenuous climb.
If you get there, however, the view of Saint Peter's Square and Rome from the lantern of the dome 384 feet above ground is both a breathtaking and impressive experience, worth all the effort.
You stand above the main nave of the temple, right on top of Michelangelo's dome, and you can find the greatest Roman landmarks, Castle Saint Angelo and the passageway for the Popes, still in the Vatican, a reminder of more troubled times. Beyond the Vatican, the Tiber, where it all started, the Pantheon, the Curia in the Forum, the Colosseum, the Palatine...
Physically and emotionally breathtaking.
