Description
Aurora and Apollo on the Chariot of the Sun by Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari, 1693. Palazzo Barberini, Rome.
When you visit the Barberini palace, it is easy, overwhelmed by the many amazing paintings and sculptures, to pass by without raising your head to the ceilings above. And then you miss all those incredible frescoes.
Aurora was the typical Baroque depiction for bedroom ceilings . However, Aurora, who heralds the day before the sun-chariot, became an ambiguous allegory applicable in many contexts, of ascent, new beginnings, or triumph over the powers of darkness.
