Description
Saint George, by Donatello. Florence, 1415.
Donatello's St George. One of fourteen sculptures commissioned by the guilds of Florence to decorate the external niches of the Orsanmichele church. St. George was commissioned by the armorers and sword makers guild.
Saint George appears as a young, brave man in armor. His eyes are looking up with some anxiety, eyebrows knit together and wrinkles in his forehead, frozen in the moment before attacking the dragon.
The sculpture was vandalized and then moved to the Bargello Museum in Florence and restored in 1892. A bronze replica replaced the original in the niche, which was itself replaced by a new marble replica in 2008. Therefore, if you want to see Donatello's original Saint George, the one in the picture, you need to visit the Bargello.
The Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence is an amazing building full of splendid sculptures tourists seem to ignore for the most part. A wonderful place to enjoy art in an intimate atmpsphere.
