Description
Staircase inside Torre del Mangia, Siena, Italy. Vintage version.
A humble tribute to M.C. Escher and his impossible perspectives.
The torre del Mangia, highest tower of the kind in Italy, is part of the Palazzo Pubblico, the town hall, located on the Piazza del Campo, the main square of Siena, where the Palio horse race takes place twice a year.
There is a version of this image without the texture.
The peculiar shape and structure of the square, set on a slope, like a roman theater, turn the Piazza del Campo into the finest square in Italy.
I visited Siena from Florence. Once enemies, Florence came out reinforced after the Black Death devastated Europe, but Siena never recovered. Before they had the chance, Florence invaded and would never permit Siena to grow strong again. Maybe because of that, Siena still preserves its medieval structure and atmosphere, which makes her so beautiful.
