Description
Villa Belza in the sunset. Biarritz, France
Biarritz is a city of the French Basque Country. It was a fishing and whaling village that turned into a summer vacation ever since the European royalty began visiting in the 1800s.
Since then, Biarritz has been known as the pearl in the crown of Southwestern France. The luxurious resort in the French Basque Country with its mild climate and beautiful coastline has attracted visitors such as Napoleon III and his wife, Eugenie, whom the prestigious Hotel du Palais was built for. Nowadays, Biarritz is known as the European surfing capital, with annual competitions of world-class standard.
As a result, lots of wonderful villas of different styles were built all along the seaside. One of them, the first one you find walking north along the beautiful coastline, is the Villa Belza, the Black Villa in Basque, which hangs on to a cliff on top of a promontory by the sea. This impressive villa, the most emblematic in Biarritz, was designed and built by Alphonse Bertrand in 1880 and marks the southern edge of the old part of the city.
