Description
Chora Chalkite Christ, Istanbul, Turkey.
Detail of the Jesus in the Deesis Mosaic, also known as Chalkite Christ, at the entryway to the Chora Church. The Chalkite Christ and the Virgin mosaic depicts Mary, Mother of God praying and Christ known as the Christos Chalkites which derived from the famous icon that stood above the Chalke Gate, the ceremonial entrance of the Great Palace of Constantinople.
The Church of the Holy Savior in Chora is a Byzantine Orthodox church from Constantinople preserved now as the Chora Museum in Istanbul. The interior of the building is covered with what many experts consider the finest surviving Byzantine mosaics and probably the finest Byzantine mosaics ever. These mosaics were preserved through the Ottoman era because when Constantinople fell and the church was turned into a mosque, the Muslims plastered over the mosaics instead of destroying them. This invaluable treasure was thus preserved and later restored when the mosque was turned into the museum it is nowadays.
