Description
Dean Ramsay Memorial and Edinburgh Castle, 1879.
Dean Ramsay Memorial is a 24 ft high granite Celtic cross on three low steps in the graveyard of the Scottish Episcopal St John's Church on Princes Street. The cross is decorated with bronze relief panels representing various stages of Christ's Passion, the Resurrection and the Ascension, plus six acts of charity. Designed by Robert Rowand Anderson, and executed by Farmer and Brindley of London.
Born in Aberdeen, Edward Bannerman Ramsay, FRSE (17 January 1793– 27 December 1872), usually referred to as Dean Ramsay, was a clergyman of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and Dean of Edinburgh in that communion from 1841, became one of the more popular church figures in Edinburgh’s history. He has a place in literature through his Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character, which had gone through 22 editions at his death. It is a book full of the personality of the author, and preserves many traits and anecdotes. This cross was erected outside St. John’s church in 1879 as a memorial to him.
