Description
Sunset from the Castle Ruins, Calatanazor, Spain.
I shot this series last summer on a stormy evening after it let up. I checked the short term weather forecast and left fifteen minutes earlier towards that place. I drove under a refreshing summer downpour and when I arrived in the place, a light drizzle was still coming down, so I took some pics from inside the car, dried my camera afterwards, and then I came up here. I think it was worth it, dont you?
Calatanazor castle (eagles castle) and village were built on top of a steep hill, to protect a strategic mountain pass. in 1002, this being border land, there was a battle between the armies of the Califate of Cordoba, under their most important general, Almanzor, and the Christians that gathered to face him. For the first time, Almanzor lost, and days later died of disease. Probably he was already sick and that had something to do with his defeat. Defeated he was nonetheless and the place became iconic.
The medieval village remains, the ramparts still surround it, but there is not much left of the castle. However, the views are breathtaking.
