Description
Curiosity Self-Portrait at Martian Sand Dune, closer. Enhanced.
Selfie of NASA's Curiosity Mars rover at "Namib Dune," while scooping samples of sand for laboratory analysis on Jan. 19, 2016.
Namib Dune is part of the dark-sand "Bagnold Dune Field" along the northwestern flank of Mount Sharp. Images taken from orbit have shown that dunes in the Bagnold field move about 3 feet per Earth year.
For scale, the rover's wheels are 20 inches in diameter and about 16 inches wide.
