Description
The Golden Clock above the entrance to the Musee d'Orsay. Paris, France. Closer crop.
The Orsay Museum was a Beaux-Arts railway station inaugurated in 1900. From 1900-1936, all trains headed southwest departed from the d’Orsay train station. Eventually, the station became too old fashioned for the newer models of trains. As Europe descended into World War II, the station became a mailing center for sending packages to prisoners of war.
The building fell in disuse and faced the possibility of destruction, but thanks to a renewed interest in 19th century architecture, and a need for a new museum space, the building was repurposed and classified as a historical monument in1978. The building was adapted to house the artworks to be displayed there but the beautiful 19th century structure of the station was left intact,as well as the huge golden clock that kept travelers informed of the time in the early 20th century. The new Musée d’Orsay was opened to the public in 1986.
Orsay is considered the chronological continuation of the Louvre painting and sculpture collections and houses the largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world, by painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, and Van Gogh.
As for Paris... What can one say about the City of Light that has not already been said?
